Our research interests

Theme 4: Inventory and Management of Urban Trees

Image
The fourth research theme aims to improve the inventory and management of urban trees in Quebec. We seek to test a participatory approach that involves citizens in the inventory of private trees, thereby expanding data sets while raising awareness about sustainable management. Additionally, we are exploring the use of drone-based LiDAR to collect LiDAR and hyperspectral data, enabling precise mapping of trees and detailed species classification. The projects in this research theme combine community engagement and cutting-edge technology to provide optimized and sustainable management of urban green spaces.

Project Participatory Science : A Participatory Approach to the Inventory and Management of Private Trees in Quebec

This tree inventory project on private lands, in collaboration with the City of Quebec, the Association Forestière des Deux Rives, the Collectif Canopée, and CERFO, is based on participatory science. Residents are invited to document their trees, contributing to a broader data collection effort. In parallel, data on trees is gathered from businesses and institutions. Additionally, interviews with private landowners highlight their key role in the health of urban forests. This project pushes the boundaries of participatory science in urban forestry while integrating inclusive practices into forest management.

Project Participatory Science : Evaluation of the ecosystem services of private trees in Quebec: Development of an interactive map

This end-of-study project, in partnership with CRAUM, the City of Quebec, the Association forestière des deux rives, the Collectif Canopée and CERFO, aims to characterize, analyze and represent in the form of an interactive map all the data on private trees in Quebec City. Using i-Tree, it evaluates their ecosystem services in order to better understand their role and raise citizens’ awareness of the importance of urban tree cover.

Project LiDAR : Fusion of LiDAR and Hyperspectral Data Collected by Drones for Tree Species Classification in Urban Woodlands

Over the past decade, remote sensing has truly revolutionized the fields of environmental science and forestry, but so far its potential has mostly been exploited at the stand level. Using high-resolution data acquired by drones, this research project aims to segment forest cover at the individual tree level using LiDAR and classify each tree species based on hyperspectral data.

Pilot project on large trees in an urban environment in the City of Mont-Tremblant (Director: J. Sivarajah)

The project consists of taking an inventory of large and interesting trees in a targeted neighborhood of the City of Mont-Tremblant as a pilot project.

Evaluate the feasibility of applying the SFI standard at the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics of Université Laval

Annabelle Poulin's undergraduate project is supervised by Janani Sivarajah and co-supervised by Meagan Hanna, Director of Urban and Community Forestry for Canada at Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This project aims to evaluate the feasibility of applying the SFI standard at the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics at Université Laval.
